History

Cabo’s colorful history includes many peoples: ancient Indian Cultures, Spanish missionaries and conquistadors, Dutch and British pirates, French and German settlers, U.S. and other military invaders, as well as modern adventurers, writers, architects, artists and pleasure seekers from around the world.

Until a relatively few years ago, Cabo San Lucas was a sleepy fishing town.

Geography

The signature landmark is "El Arco", a natural stone arch at the southernmost tip of the Baja peninsula in Cabo San Lucas. The arch marks the meeting of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortéz, each an unpredictable shade of blue or green.

The bay is usually crowded with fishing and sightseeing boats, yachts, sailboats, kayaks, jet skis, and the occasional cruise ship or warship.

Sunrises and sunsets in Cabo are magnificent. And a full moon rising over the Sea of Cortéz is equally beautiful.

Los Cabos is in the Mountain Time Zone and observes Daylight Savings Time.

Vacation Attractions

Los Cabos has become the third most popular vacation destination in North America. This vacation playground has successfully blended together environment and development. Golf course greens and sunset golds accentuate the coastal surf and tranquil beaches.

Cruise ships regularly visit Cabo San Lucas, which is also home to the largest marina in Baja Sur.

Cabo is filled with restaurants, shops, nightclubs, extravagant homes, and a brand new shopping mall at the marina. Aromas from open-air grills and music fill the air. Most Mexicans in Cabo speak some English along with Spanish.

San José del Cabo

San José del Cabo is more the old, authentic Mexican town, quieter than Cabo. It sits on hills overlooking the Sea of Cortéz, near a freshwater estuary formed by a river that flows underground from the mountains. The estuary is a bird and wildlife preserve. Many of San José's buildings date to Spanish colonial days, and it has a traditional town plaza for frequent fiestas.
